The Australian National University (ANU) is inviting Canberra and the wider community to celebrate its 75th birthday this Sunday.

The University will host a COVID-safe party to mark its incredible contribution to the nation and the world over the last seven decades.

Highlights include the launch of a living history project and keynote panel on the past, present and future of ANU. This includes a digital exhibition of more than 500 images from the University’s archives, as well as short films and texts about the people, places and ideas that have shaped ANU.

Other events include tours of the ANU classics museum and campus architecture, Indigenous heritage walks and stargazing, an exhibition of items in the ANU heritage collection, live science shows, and kids’ activities ranging from archaeological digs and learning how to juggle.

ANU experts will also discuss some of the biggest issues and challenges the nation faces in the next 75 years in a series of pop up talks, including our economy after COVID, Australia’s role in the space race and interstellar exploration, and how we tackle the social and political roadblocks to climate change action.

ANU Vice-Chancellor Professor Brian Schmidt will be virtually joined by Chancellor the Hon Julie Bishop to cut a 75th birthday cake.

“At ANU we are extremely proud of our 75-year history serving Australia and all Australians as this country’s national university,” Professor Schmidt said.

“There have been many highlights over the last seven-and-a-half decades and we want to mark these with all our students, staff, alumni and the wider community.

“There is also much to look forward to over the next 75 years as we continue to help improve the prosperity to our nation, the region, and the world through our research and its translation, as well as through education.

“We are a university that serves the nation but we are also deeply connected to Canberra and our wonderful local community.

“We are inviting everyone to come and celebrate the last 75 years of ANU as well as at least the next 75 years. Come along for what promises to be an exciting and engaging day of celebrations!”

Attendance at the ANU 75th birthday is free. Attendees are encouraged to register at the ANU website: https://www.anu.edu.au/news/all-news/anu-turns-75

Celebrations kick off from 11am.
