ANU hosted the inaugural National Indigenous Summer School in December 2016. Since 2018 the Summer School has been expanded to incorporate the Humanities and Social Science disciplines, and is a joint initiative between the ANU Tjabal Centre, and all seven Colleges across ANU. The STEMM stream consists of disciplines from the College of Science, the College of Health & Medicine and the College of Engineering and Computer Science and is held annually.

The objective of the Summer School STEMM stream is to provide Year 10 and 11 Indigenous students, drawn from across Australia, with an opportunity to experience university life as they participate in hands-on activities across the Science and Engineering disciplines. The Summer School also provides students with opportunities to live in an ANU Hall of Residence, obtain program and career advice, speak with expert staff in their fields of interest, and interact with Indigenous students and staff.

The longer term goal is to encourage the Summer School students to undertake university study in Science and Engineering in the future, somewhere suitable to their needs and interests.
